Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been diagnosed with skin cancer, one week after being sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup, his doctor announced on Wednesday.

A biopsy of skin lesions revealed a squamous cell carcinoma, “a type of skin cancer that can have more serious consequences,” explained Dr. Claudio Birolini during a press briefing.

Bolsonaro, 70, has been under house arrest since early August. He was discharged on Wednesday afternoon from the DF Star private clinic in Brasília, where he had been admitted the day before following an episode of vomiting, severe hiccups, and low blood pressure.

According to the clinic’s medical bulletin, cancer was detected in two of the eight lesions removed during a previous visit on Sunday. The hospital stated that the diagnosis requires medical monitoring and periodic reassessments. For now, however, Dr. Birolini clarified that Bolsonaro will not undergo “active treatment” such as chemotherapy.

The former leader (2019–2022) has long faced health issues, many stemming from the knife attack he survived in 2018, which required several surgeries in the following years. After an overnight stay in the clinic, doctors reported an improvement in his symptoms and kidney function after intravenous treatment.

Despite his conviction, Bolsonaro cannot be jailed until all appeals are exhausted. His legal team has already announced that it will challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling, which found him guilty of conspiring to remain in power despite losing the 2022 election to current leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
