France: Controversial comedian Dieudonné banned from performing in western region
The prefecture of Indre-et-Loire announced Sunday the prohibition of a planned show by controversial comedian Dieudonné Mbala Mbala near Tours, following several similar bans in Loire-Atlantique and northern France.
According to the prefecture, Dieudonné had advertised a performance within a 20-kilometer radius of Tours, scheduled at 7 p.m. at an undisclosed location. Authorities cited the comedian’s multiple convictions for antisemitic remarks, incitement to racial hatred, and violations of human dignity.
Prefect Thomas Campeaux issued the ban citing the risk of public disorder and potential criminal offenses arising from such statements.
In recent weeks, several of Dieudonné’s performances have been halted by law enforcement. On Friday, gendarmes interrupted a show in Vieillevigne (Loire-Atlantique) attended by 150–200 people. Earlier, on October 10, a performance in Hérin (Nord) was stopped following a prefectural ban validated by the administrative court. In July, gendarmes also prevented a show in Lestrem (Pas-de-Calais).
Despite these measures, in January, the Paris administrative court allowed his “Friday 13” show, originally banned by the police prefecture, to proceed.
Dieudonné, expelled in 2017 from his Paris theater Théâtre de la Main d’Or, has repeatedly been convicted for racial insults and incitement to hatred, and now performs in alternative venues, including an itinerant bus.
