France: Tensions rise between Lecornu and The Republicans

A political clash has emerged in France between Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Les Républicains (LR) after the conservative party announced it would not join his upcoming government.

In response, Lecornu—who resigned and was then reappointed as prime minister—declared his intention to form a “free government, not imprisoned by political parties.” He emphasized he had “no personal career agenda” and “not many candidates” were eager to take on the role of prime minister, while expressing respect for Bruno Retailleau’s decision to decline participation.

Meanwhile, the Republican senators reiterated their stance of “support without participation”, according to party leader Mathieu Darnaud, who confirmed their willingness to back the government “text by text” but considered the current conditions insufficient for entering the executive.

This internal division continues to fuel debate within LR ranks, as some deputies remain open to collaboration while others reject any formal alliance with Lecornu’s centrist leadership.
