France toughens stance on Algeria amid diplomatic tensions
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister François Bayrou, which Le Figaro obtained, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for stronger measures against the Algerian government. The president urged his administration to take “additional decisions” following a series of incidents that have worsened bilateral relations in recent months.
"It could have been different," Macron stated in an interview with the newspaper. However, he now believes France has "no choice but to adopt a firmer approach" toward Algiers.
This position comes after six months of growing tensions between Paris and Algiers, fueled by political and diplomatic disputes. The arrest and sentencing of writers Boualem Sansal and Christophe Gleizes, the detainment of Algerian influencers (as highlighted by Senator Bruno Retailleau), and persistent disagreements over the Sahara issue have contributed to a strained climate.
Among the proposals under review, Macron suggested suspending the 2013 bilateral agreement on visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and official passports. Although symbolic, this move would signal a significant shift in French policy toward Algeria.
