A 20-year-old Franco-Algerian man has been formally charged and placed in pre-trial detention in Paris on suspicion of planning a jihadist terrorist attack, according to judicial sources and information confirmed by French news agency AFP.

The man is accused of criminal conspiracy with intent to commit terrorism, particularly for plotting violent acts against individuals, and has been under investigation by France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office.

According to sources close to the investigation, the suspect is affiliated with the jihadist movement and had reportedly been under surveillance by France’s internal intelligence agency (DGSI) since the COVID-19 lockdown, due to his repeated viewing of radical Islamist content online.

Targeting "Jews and non-believers"

Regional newspaper La Dépêche du Midi, which first reported the case, revealed that the suspect is originally from the Toulouse region and had expressed intentions to carry out an attack targeting "Jews and non-believers." These threats led investigators to take swift action.

The case unfolded as part of a broader judicial investigation already underway at the anti-terrorism division of the Paris Judicial Court. His arrest was reportedly prompted by leads uncovered during the detention of a 15-year-old girl from the same region, who was charged in mid-June in connection with the same plot.

According to La Dépêche du Midi, both individuals are believed to suffer from psychiatric conditions, adding a layer of complexity to the judicial process.

Security services on alert

The suspect had been classified as a "Fiche S", a special file used by French security services to monitor individuals considered a potential threat to national security. Such classifications are common in terrorism-related cases, particularly for individuals known to frequent radical content online or extremist circles.

Authorities have not disclosed specific details of the planned attack, but the seriousness of the charges and the background of the suspect suggest it was in an advanced phase of planning.

Neither of the suspect's two lawyers responded to media inquiries as of Friday evening.

Broader concerns over radicalization

The case underscores ongoing concerns about homegrown extremism and the radicalization of young people in France, particularly those with dual nationalities or from vulnerable social backgrounds.

It also comes amid heightened counterterrorism vigilance in France, with security forces under pressure to intercept lone-wolf attackers and prevent coordinated plots before they materialize.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a wider network.
