French associations take to the streets to protest financial struggles
Thousands of members of France’s nonprofit organizations took to the streets on Saturday to denounce the budget cuts and rising costs that threaten their survival. Demonstrations were held in more than 70 cities, at the call of Le Mouvement Associatif, which represents 700,000 associations across the country.
“The situation is extremely tense — it’s no longer sustainable,” warned Claire Thoury, president of the movement, stressing that the 1.5 million active associations in France are facing both the inflation crisis and a decline in public subsidies.
According to a recent survey, 30% of employer associations have less than three months of cash reserves. Many have been forced to reduce or suspend activities, delay projects, and lay off staff, despite their essential role in social aid, gender equality, and sports access.
France’s nonprofit sector employs 1.9 million people and relies on 20 million volunteers, making it one of the pillars of the country’s social fabric.
