French director brings Camus's existential masterpiece to Morocco's sun-drenched landscape
François Ozon has chosen Morocco as the filming location for his upcoming adaptation of Albert Camus's renowned novel "The Stranger" (L'Étranger). Production is set to commence in April, utilizing Morocco's natural Mediterranean landscapes as the backdrop for this classic tale.
The 1942 literary masterpiece follows Meursault, a man characterized by his emotional detachment from life. After his mother's death, he commits a murder on an Algerian beach, leading to a trial that scrutinizes not just his crime, but his apparent lack of emotional response to events.
The novel's powerful themes are deeply intertwined with the physical environment, particularly the sun and heat, which play crucial roles in shaping Meursault's actions and the story's pivotal moments. The selection of Morocco's sunlit terrain appears deliberately chosen to capture this intensity and reinforce the protagonist's sense of alienation.
This adaptation marks the second major film version of the novel, following Luchino Visconti's 1967 interpretation starring Marcello Mastroianni and Anna Karina. "The Stranger" stands among the world's most widely read novels, sharing company with classics like "Le Petit Prince" and "Les Misérables."
The story's impact continues to resonate through its infamous opening line: "Aujourd'hui, maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier, je ne sais pas" ("Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know."), which has become one of literature's most memorable passages.
While details about casting and additional crew members remain undisclosed, Ozon faces the challenge of bringing fresh perspective to Camus's existential and absurdist themes in this new cinematic interpretation.
