French navy seizes 1.4 tons of cocaine in Atlantic operation
The French navy has carried out a major drug interception in the Atlantic Ocean, seizing around 1.4 tons of cocaine during a maritime operation conducted in international waters.
According to official sources, the operation targeted a fishing vessel sailing from South America. Following the interception, the individuals involved were handed over to Brazilian judicial authorities during a port call made by the French frigate involved in the mission.
The confiscated shipment, estimated to be worth approximately €41 million on the illicit market, was seized after intelligence-led coordination between several agencies. French authorities acted on information provided by the national customs intelligence services and the anti-narcotics office, in cooperation with international partners, including British and US law enforcement agencies.
This latest operation highlights the growing role of naval forces in combating transnational drug trafficking routes across the Atlantic. French maritime authorities have intensified surveillance efforts in recent years, targeting smuggling networks operating between South America, Africa and Europe.
In 2025, the French navy reported record drug seizures worldwide, with tens of tons of narcotics intercepted, including a significant volume of cocaine. Officials say these results reflect strengthened international cooperation and improved intelligence-sharing mechanisms in the fight against organized crime.
