Germany arrests Syrian man over suspected terror plot
German authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin on suspicion of preparing a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack, amid rising security concerns across the country.
The suspect was detained on Saturday in the Neukölln district of the German capital, according to a spokesperson for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office. He is accused of planning an attack motivated by Islamist extremism, though officials did not release further details about the alleged plot.
The man remains in custody and was expected to appear before an investigating judge on Sunday afternoon. Prosecutors said he is being charged with preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.
According to the German newspaper Bild, police raided three properties in Berlin linked to the suspect, seizing materials that could be used to make explosives. The attack was reportedly intended to target the capital, though authorities have not confirmed any specific location or timing.
Security tensions rise in Germany
The arrest comes amid heightened tension in Germany, which has witnessed several deadly knife attacks and extremist-related incidents in recent months, including acts of jihadist violence and far-right attacks.
Berlin remains on alert following the 2016 Christmas market truck attack, when a Tunisian-born assailant killed 12 people — the deadliest jihadist attack on German soil.
Authorities have since tightened surveillance and counterterrorism efforts, particularly in major cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich.
