Germany: Nurse sentenced to life imprisonment for killing ten patients
A German nurse has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of ten patients at a hospital near Aachen, western Germany. The 44-year-old, who worked in palliative care, was also found guilty of 27 attempted murders for incidents occurring between December 2023 and May 2024 at the Würselen hospital.
According to the prosecution, the nurse administered overdoses of sedatives or painkillers to terminally ill patients, mostly elderly. Investigators stated that his intent was to reduce his workload during night shifts, describing him as a “master of life and death.” The court followed the prosecutor’s request that he should not be eligible for release after 15 years, as is normally possible under German law.
The accused reportedly worked without enthusiasm and showed little empathy, becoming irritated when patients required extensive care. Further exhumations have been conducted to investigate possible additional victims, and authorities indicated that a second trial could follow.
This case echoes other recent incidents in Germany, including a palliative care physician accused of killing fifteen patients, and the notorious Niels Högel, a former nurse convicted in 2019 for murdering at least 85 patients in Lower Saxony hospitals.
