Germany: Suspected islamist held after shooting at cars
A suspected supporter of the Islamic State (IS) has been placed in pre-trial detention in southern Germany after allegedly attempting to cause road accidents by shooting at cars with an air rifle, Bavarian police announced on Friday.
The suspect reportedly fired at 22 vehicles between September 9 and 11 on a highway with a 100 km/h speed limit. No injuries or collisions were reported. He was arrested on September 13 near the scene, and police seized his air rifle, which was equipped with a scope.
According to investigators, the man appeared to be motivated by Islamist ideology, identifying with the Islamic State and seeking to “eliminate infidels.” Authorities note that this case comes amid a rise in attacks linked to extremist sympathizers, which has fueled support for the far-right AfD, a party critical of Germany’s and the EU’s migration policies.
