Girona flower festival 2025: A visual journey through art, history and bloom

Explore Girona’s 70th Temps de Flors festival, featuring 114 floral installations across the Old Town, art inspired by Monet, live music and iconic Game of Thrones filming sites.

Girona’s flower festival marks 70 years with an artistic flourish

Each May, the Catalan city of Girona transforms into a vast outdoor gallery for its celebrated Temps de Flors festival. In 2025, the event marks its 70th edition, unfolding from May 10 to 19. Across these nine days, more than a hundred floral installations redefine the city’s historic heart, blending art, nature and architecture.

Timed from morning until 11 p.m. daily, the festival draws tens of thousands of visitors. Weekdays remain the best option for those wishing to avoid the weekend crowds.

Floral art across Girona’s historic core

The 2025 edition features 114 distinct floral installations. These go far beyond traditional displays. Designers use blooms as building blocks to create immersive artworks, often set within Girona’s most iconic heritage sites.

Most of the installations are located in the Barri Vell, Girona’s Old Town. The setting includes the city’s medieval walls, the ancient Jewish quarter and narrow cobbled streets. Among the most prominent locations is the Girona Cathedral, whose sweeping staircase serves as the canvas for one of the festival’s main displays.

This very staircase was immortalized in Game of Thrones, where it doubled as the Great Sept of Baelor. Fans will also recognize other filming locations scattered across the Old Town.

Cultural venues and themed displays

The festival’s installations extend into several of Girona’s historic sites. The Arabic Baths—actually built by the local Jewish community in 1194—host one display. Others are located inside the Girona History Museum and along the Passeig Arqueològic, the walkway bordering the city’s ancient fortifications.

Artistic themes range from classic to abstract. This year’s notable creations include:

- A pond of floating lilies watched over by a figure evoking Monet

- Sculptures of human organs crafted from flowers to honor organ donation

- A field of kinetic oat plants that respond to movement and light

Maps, routes and musical interludes

To navigate the festival, visitors are advised to collect a printed map from the Tourist Information Office near the Old Town entrance. Maps outline official routes, though casual wandering often leads to surprise discoveries. Colored markers identify each installation’s location.

In parallel, the Girona A Capella Festival brings vocal harmony to the streets. Most performances are scheduled at Plaça de la Independència, offering a musical counterpoint to the visual spectacle.

A celebration rooted in place and creativity

Temps de Flors is more than a flower festival. It is a convergence of cultural memory, public space and contemporary art. As Girona celebrates seven decades of blooms, the 2025 edition stands out as a landmark in the city’s evolving identity—honoring the past while embracing new forms of expression.
