A 44-year-old woman from La Teste-de-Buch, in the Gironde department of southwestern France, has died from injuries sustained after being assaulted by her partner in late August. The tragedy marks the third femicide in the region since the beginning of the year, according to local authorities.

The victim had been placed in an induced coma following a violent altercation with her companion, also aged 44, on the night of August 20 to 21. The argument reportedly took place outside their home, near the Port du Rocher district. According to witness accounts, the confrontation escalated when the man struck the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head on the ground.

Initially, the suspect — an oyster farmer — claimed it had been a domestic accident, saying he had only “pushed” his partner. However, testimony from a 17-year-old witness, a friend of the couple’s daughter, contradicted that version. A forensic report later confirmed that the injuries were consistent with a blow to the face followed by a fall.

The man was initially charged with intentional assault causing permanent disability and placed under judicial supervision. Following the woman’s death on October 2, prosecutors in Bordeaux have now reclassified the case as intentional violence resulting in death by a partner.

Bordeaux prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul reiterated “the scale of the work still to be done” to combat domestic violence in France, where dozens of women die each year at the hands of their partners.
