Google reshapes its AI division to strengthen competition with OpenAI

Google has announced a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence division, DeepMind, as competition intensifies among the world's leading AI developers. The organizational changes are designed to accelerate innovation, strengthen product development, and reinforce Google's position in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence market.

As part of the restructuring, Demis Hassabis, the longtime leader of DeepMind and a prominent figure in AI research, will transition from his role as Chief Executive Officer of DeepMind to become President of DeepMind and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. In his new position, he will focus on long-term research, including the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), an area many technology companies consider a key objective for the future of AI.

Operational leadership of DeepMind has been entrusted to Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly the laboratory's Chief Technology Officer. Reporting directly to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, he is expected to oversee the expansion of AI products and accelerate the integration of research into commercial applications.

The restructuring comes as Google faces increasing pressure from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have introduced advanced AI models that have attracted significant attention for their performance across a wide range of tasks, including software development, content generation, and reasoning capabilities. Google has made substantial progress with its Gemini family of AI models, but competition in the industry continues to intensify.

At the same time, the company has experienced the departure of several respected researchers who have played important roles in advancing artificial intelligence. The movement of experienced scientists between major technology firms and emerging startups reflects the intense global competition for AI talent, which has become one of the defining characteristics of the sector.

Google continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence research, cloud computing infrastructure, and specialized hardware designed to support increasingly sophisticated AI systems. The company also remains active in funding innovative startups and collaborating with research organizations to advance scientific discovery through machine learning technologies.

Industry analysts view the leadership changes as part of Google's broader strategy to combine cutting-edge research with faster product development. As artificial intelligence becomes central to search, cloud services, productivity software, and scientific research, technology companies are reorganizing their operations to respond more quickly to evolving market demands.

With this new leadership structure, Google aims to strengthen its ability to compete in the global AI race while continuing to develop advanced technologies that can be deployed across its expanding ecosystem of digital products and services.
