Greek climber dies after fatal fall in Mont Blanc massif
A Greek mountaineer in his thirties tragically lost his life on Monday, August 4, after falling several hundred meters in the infamous Goûter couloir of the Mont Blanc massif. According to the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) of Chamonix, the victim was descending alone and without a safety rope when the accident occurred.
Technical error likely to blame
The climber, described as carrying a "heavy backpack," likely made a "technical error," the PGHM told AFP, confirming details initially reported by France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Fatigue, combined with the additional weight and potential lack of focus, could have contributed to the tragedy, the rescue team noted.
The body was discovered late Monday morning by search teams, marking another fatality in one of Mont Blanc's most perilous sections.
The "death couloir" claims another life
The Goûter couloir, located beneath the Goûter refuge at an altitude of 3,835 meters, is infamous for its dangers. It is a critical part of the classic route to Mont Blanc but has been nicknamed the "death couloir" due to frequent rockfalls and the alarming number of fatalities. Over 100 climbers have lost their lives in this treacherous passage, particularly notorious during the summer months.
Authorities continue to warn of the risks associated with the route, urging climbers to exercise extreme caution when attempting the ascent or descent.
