Bissau, Guinea-Bissau – Guinea-Bissau is holding presidential and legislative elections on Sunday in a critical test of its democratic institutions, which have been repeatedly challenged by political rivalries and attempts to influence governance.

Twelve candidates are competing for the presidency, including incumbent Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is seeking a second term with support from the No Kumpu Guinea-Bissau Republican Platform. Embalo has pledged to create more jobs for young people and attract foreign investment to the West African nation.

Other key contenders include former President José Mario Vaz, 67, and Fernando Dias, 47, from the Party for Social Renewal (PRS), who is widely seen as Embalo’s main challenger. Dias has promised to enhance national security and promote reconciliation. Baciro Dja, 52, a former prime minister, is also among the candidates.

Voter turnout is expected to involve around half of the country’s 2.2 million citizens, according to the National Electoral Commission. Interim commission president M’Bapi Cabi encouraged voters to participate respectfully and assured that the elections would be conducted transparently and impartially.

Political analysts describe the elections as a litmus test for Guinea-Bissau’s fragile democracy. Beverly Ochieng, a senior analyst at Control Risks, noted that while Embalo is likely to win, he may face legitimacy challenges and political opposition in the months and years ahead.

Since assuming office in 2020, Embalo has faced several coup attempts and deep political rivalries, particularly with former Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira, who supported Dias this year but was disqualified for missing the filing deadline. Analysts emphasize that the next president must focus on rebuilding trust in public institutions, reducing corruption, and fostering dialogue with political opponents to stabilize the country.

In the legislative elections, fourteen political groups, including one coalition, are competing for seats in the National Assembly, signaling an important test for parliamentary representation alongside the presidential race.
