Guinea Presidential Election: Nine candidates approved, including junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya
Guinea’s Supreme Court has released a provisional list of nine candidates for the presidential election scheduled on December 28, including the country’s current leader, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya.
Doumbouya, 40, has ruled the West African nation since seizing power in a military coup in 2021. Despite earlier promises to restore civilian rule, he officially submitted his candidacy on Monday, following months of encouragement from his supporters.
Out of 51 applications, the court retained eight other candidates, most of them little known to the general public. Absent from the list are key political figures such as exiled former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo. The opposition may instead rally behind Faya Lansana Milimono, a vocal critic of the junta.
Rejected candidates have 72 hours to appeal the decision, and the Supreme Court has 48 hours to issue its final ruling.
Four years after the coup that ousted former president Alpha Condé, Guineans are preparing for a crucial vote meant to mark the end of the military-led transition. The December election is widely seen as a decisive step toward restoring democracy in one of the poorest nations in the world.
