Heroic girl saves sister during southport attack, Inquiry reveals
A young girl in Southport risked her own life to protect her younger sister during a stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in July 2024, according to testimony heard at a public inquiry.
The mother of the siblings described how her eldest daughter was stabbed multiple times in the chest and arm but still shielded her younger sister from the attacker. “Our eldest saved her sister’s life that day. Despite her injuries, she put herself in harm’s way to protect her little sister,” the mother said.
Both girls survived, but their mother noted that they now live with severe trauma. The inquiry is examining missed opportunities to prevent the attack, which left three children dead and ten others injured.
The attacker, then 17, had previously been referred to Prevent, a counter-radicalisation program, multiple times. Parents attending the inquiry emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect children from similar threats in the future.
Witnesses also recounted other acts of bravery by children who ensured their peers could escape safely despite being attacked themselves. The inquiry continues to assess accountability and possible changes to safety protocols in youth programs.
