Moroccan climber Hind Zemmama has achieved another remarkable feat by summiting Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in Indonesia. Standing at 4,884 meters, it is the highest peak in Oceania and one of the most technically challenging climbs among the Seven Summits, the tallest mountains on each continent.

Zemmama shared her thoughts on the accomplishment, emphasizing the importance of mental resilience and faith: “The moral side, positivity, and belief in God are the basic elements to overcome all the difficulties. I’m proud of my Moroccan identity as well as my Moroccan passport that opens doors of respect and admiration everywhere I go.”

A journey of courage and determination

Climbing Carstensz Pyramid is a demanding challenge. The route includes steep limestone rock faces, a Tyrolean traverse at the summit, and an arduous approach through dense jungle. Reaching the base camp typically requires a helicopter ride due to the mountain’s remote location. Additionally, unpredictable weather conditions test even the most seasoned climbers.

This latest achievement is part of Zemmama’s growing portfolio of extraordinary climbs. Born in Casablanca and now a commercial director based in Macao, Zemmama only began mountaineering three years ago. Despite starting relatively late, her rise in the sport has been meteoric.

From Kilimanjaro to Everest

Zemmama’s mountaineering journey began in 2022, when she summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. In 2024, she climbed Aconcagua in Argentina, South America’s highest peak, followed by Mount Elbrus in Russia, the tallest mountain in Europe. Her crowning achievement came in May 2025, when she reached the summit of Mount Everest, raising the Moroccan flag on the world’s highest peak.

With Carstensz Pyramid now behind her, Zemmama has conquered five of the Seven Summits: the highest peaks in Africa, South America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Only Denali in North America and Mount Vinson in Antarctica remain on her list.

Zemmama’s story is one of bravery, determination, and inspiration. She continues to break barriers for Moroccan women in mountaineering and endurance sports, often crediting her mental strength and spirituality for her success.
