His Majesty King Mohammed VI used the opening of Morocco’s parliamentary session to call for greater accountability and vigilance in public service. Addressing lawmakers, he emphasized the need to align major national projects with social programs to ensure they deliver tangible benefits to all citizens, regardless of region or social class. The monarch also warned against negligence in public investment, pushing for efficient use of resources and faster implementation of reforms.

Amid rising public discontent, particularly from youth movements like GenZ212, the king’s speech comes at a critical time. Protesters have criticized the government for prioritizing large infrastructure projects over pressing socio-economic issues, including healthcare and education. These concerns have been amplified following reports of inadequate healthcare services, such as the deaths of women in labor at Agadir’s Hassan II Hospital.

HM King Mohammed VI stressed that economic growth and infrastructure development must directly contribute to improving citizens’ quality of life. Citing the need to address regional disparities, he reaffirmed his commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and equitable progress.

The Moroccan economy has shown promise, creating 82,000 jobs in 2024, but critics argue that unemployment remains a significant challenge, especially for younger generations. Healthcare is another pressing issue, with chronic staff shortages and under-resourced facilities threatening the system’s efficiency. A report from the National Office of the Independent Union of Nurses described the situation as a “ticking time bomb,” urging the government to address systemic issues and improve conditions.

The king’s message underscored his vision for a unified Morocco, where economic development is inseparable from social prograess, and public officials are held accountable for their responsibilities.
