The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is seeking to restart its full monitoring mission in Iran after months of suspended cooperation. On Monday, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed cautious optimism that an agreement could be reached “in the coming days,” while warning that “time is running out.”

Speaking at a quarterly meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, Grossi stressed that progress has been made but key details remain under negotiation. “There is still time, not much, but enough if there is goodwill and a clear sense of responsibility,” he told reporters.

Tensions between Tehran and the IAEA escalated after Israeli airstrikes in June targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities, followed by US strikes against Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz. In response, Iran suspended cooperation with international inspectors, accusing the agency of failing to condemn the attacks. The Iranian parliament even passed a law in July restricting future cooperation in principle.

Late last month, a team of IAEA inspectors briefly returned to supervise fuel replacement at the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the country’s only electricity-producing nuclear facility. However, Iranian officials emphasized that this did not represent a full resumption of collaboration.

Diplomatic talks are now focused on finding a way to restore inspections at Iran’s main nuclear sites, a crucial step for transparency and to prevent further escalation in an already volatile regional context.
