Imec acquires advanced Asml tool to accelerate next-generation chip development
Belgian research center imec has secured a cutting-edge lithography system from ASML, marking a significant step forward in Europe’s efforts to remain competitive in the global semiconductor industry.
The newly acquired machine uses High Numerical Aperture extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, a breakthrough expected to enable the production of smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient chips. This type of equipment is extremely rare worldwide and is considered essential for the next wave of innovation in microelectronics.
The system will play a central role in imec’s NanoIC pilot line, a large-scale initiative designed to support collaboration between industry leaders, researchers, and technology developers. The project is partly backed by European public funding, including support linked to the EU Chips Act.
As the only manufacturer of EUV lithography machines, ASML holds a critical position in the semiconductor supply chain. Its technology allows chipmakers to “print” increasingly complex circuits onto silicon wafers, a process fundamental to advancing computing power.
The introduction of High NA technology represents a major evolution, enabling significantly smaller chip features. This advancement is expected to benefit sectors such as artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and advanced memory systems, where efficiency and processing speed are crucial.
Imec’s model focuses on providing shared access to high-end tools, allowing companies and researchers to test and refine their technologies in a collaborative environment. Through partnerships with major equipment suppliers, the institute has become a key hub for innovation in chip manufacturing.
The acquisition also reinforces Europe’s ambition to strengthen its technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on external supply chains. As global demand for semiconductors continues to grow, investments in advanced research infrastructure are seen as essential for maintaining competitiveness.
With the integration of this new system, imec is expected to play a leading role in preparing the semiconductor technologies that could reach commercial production in the coming years.
