Incest scandal in Morocco sparks legal and social debate
Authorities in Morocco are investigating a shocking incest case in Al Manzeh, near Ain Aouda, 30 kilometers from Rabat, involving a father and his daughter accused of engaging in an illicit relationship that reportedly resulted in six children. The case has ignited widespread outrage and scrutiny of the country’s legal framework surrounding incest.
Arrest and investigation
The Royal Gendarmerie has detained the father, his daughter, and six children as part of the investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the father is the biological parent of two of the six children, while the daughter admitted to having other extramarital affairs.
The case was referred to an investigating judge at the Rabat Court of Appeal, with genetic testing underway to confirm paternity. The incident came to light after a 20-year-old woman, allegedly conceived from another illicit relationship between her mother and her biological father—who was also her grandfather—filed a complaint citing difficulties in obtaining official documentation.
Expanding allegations
Authorities are also investigating whether other children involved in the case may have been victims of sexual abuse. Biological samples have been collected for forensic testing to determine familial relationships.
This case has exposed gaps in Moroccan law regarding incest. While extramarital relations are punishable under Article 490 of the Moroccan Penal Code, consensual incest between adults is not explicitly criminalized. However, sexual harassment within a family is penalized under Article 503-1-2, which carries a prison sentence of three to five years and financial penalties ranging from MAD 5,000 to MAD 50,000 (approximately $500 to $5,000).
Broader context
The scandal occurs against a backdrop of increasing awareness of sexual abuse cases in Morocco. Recent incidents include the gang rape of a 13-year-old orphan in El Jadida Province and allegations of misconduct by camp supervisors in Ifrane.
Islam, which strictly forbids incest, underscores the sanctity of family bonds. This cultural and religious context has amplified public outrage, as the investigation continues to unfold.
