India: 11 dead in central railway collision
Bilaspur, India – November 5, 2025: At least eleven people were killed and several others injured on Tuesday evening in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train in central India.
The accident occurred near the city of Bilaspur, about 115 kilometers northeast of Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh state, when the passenger train struck the rear of the freight train, according to senior government official Sanjay Agarwal.
Rescue teams worked for hours to clear the damaged carriage using cranes and plasma cutters. The passenger train’s driver was among the deceased, while his co-driver sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized in a private clinic. Around twenty additional passengers were also injured and taken to local hospitals.
Indian Railways mobilized resources for the rescue operation and has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The operator also announced financial assistance for the families of victims and the injured.
Despite ongoing government efforts to improve railway safety, India continues to experience hundreds of accidents each year, some fatal, in a country where over 12 million passengers travel daily on approximately 14,000 trains.
