India: Defense Minister vows justice after deadly car explosion in Delhi
New Delhi (AFP) — India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh pledged on Tuesday that those responsible for Monday’s car explosion in the heart of the capital will be “brought to justice.” The blast, which occurred near the historic Red Fort, left at least eight people dead and 19 others injured.
“The country’s leading security and intelligence agencies are conducting a swift and thorough investigation into the incident,” Singh said during a press conference in New Delhi. “The perpetrators of this tragedy will be held accountable and will not be spared under any circumstances.”
The explosion, which shook the busy old quarters of Delhi on Monday evening, sparked panic among residents and prompted the rapid deployment of police, forensic teams, and bomb disposal units. Authorities cordoned off the area and urged citizens to avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
As of Tuesday morning, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack. Preliminary reports suggest that the blast may have originated from a vehicle parked near the Red Fort’s outer perimeter, though officials have not ruled out the possibility of foul play or a deliberate act of terror.
The incident has renewed concerns over urban security in India’s major cities, especially as New Delhi prepares to host several international events in the coming months.
