At least nine people were trampled to death in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh after a massive stampede occurred on Saturday, November 1, at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga, district of Srikakulam, local authorities reported.

According to Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, the tragedy unfolded when a dense crowd of devotees gathered for a religious ceremony, leading to chaos and panic. “I express my deepest sorrow,” the governor said, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences to the families of the victims, adding: “I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Deadly stampedes are common in India, often blamed on poor crowd control and insufficient safety measures during religious or political gatherings.

In September, 39 people died in a stampede during a rally held by actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu, and earlier in June, several others were injured during a Hindu festival in the coastal state of Odisha.
