Indonesia: School collapse leaves 3 dead and 38 missing
Rescue teams in Indonesia are searching for at least 38 people reported missing after an Islamic school collapsed in the city of Sidoarjo, East Java, leaving three confirmed dead. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at the Al-Khoziny boarding school, where more than a hundred students had gathered for prayer when the building suddenly gave way.
According to Mohammad Syafii, director of the National Search and Rescue Agency, 99 people have survived the collapse. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that rescue operations continue to locate those trapped under the rubble. Families of missing students have gathered around the site, anxiously awaiting news.
Preliminary reports suggest the building collapsed while workers were adding an additional floor. Concerns over lax construction standards have been raised, especially following several similar incidents in Java and Kalimantan in recent years, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
