Tehran (AFP) — Iran’s judiciary announced on Tuesday that a man convicted of murdering a doctor in the country’s southwest has been executed in public.

According to the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online, the sentence was carried out in the city of Yasuj, the capital of the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. The convict had been found guilty of killing Dr. Davoudi, and his death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court following a psychiatric evaluation confirming his criminal responsibility.

“The implementation of this punishment sends a message to those who threaten public security and the safety of citizens,” said provincial prosecutor Vahid Mousavian, quoted by Mizan.

Iran, which applies the death penalty primarily by hanging, ranks second only to China in the number of executions carried out each year, according to human rights organizations such as Amnesty International.

While most executions in Iran take place inside prisons, public hangings still occur occasionally, drawing sharp criticism from international observers who view such practices as degrading and contrary to international law.
