U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran is now significantly farther from acquiring a nuclear weapon following a recent U.S. airstrike targeting three of Tehran’s primary nuclear facilities. Speaking during the NATO summit, Rubio emphasized the effectiveness of the strike, asserting that “substantial damage” had been inflicted across various critical components of Iran’s nuclear program.

These remarks followed reports suggesting that the damage had only delayed Iran’s nuclear efforts by several months, according to an early U.S. intelligence evaluation. However, both President Donald Trump and the White House strongly denied that conclusion. Trump reiterated via his social media platform that the nuclear sites were “completely destroyed.” A White House spokesperson dismissed the intelligence assessment as “flat-out wrong.”

Rubio challenged the credibility of those media accounts, insisting they failed to reflect the extent of the operation’s success. He described the damage as “very significant,” and said further details were still emerging.

Meanwhile, a ceasefire agreement brokered by Trump between Iran and Israel appeared to be holding, following a period of intense conflict. On June 13, Israel initiated a surprise aerial assault on Iranian nuclear sites, killing senior military figures. Iran, which has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons, responded with a missile offensive targeting Israeli cities and military positions.
