Iraq: explosion at oil field suspends operations
An explosion early Tuesday morning at an oil production site in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq has forced the suspension of operations, according to a statement from U.S.-based energy company HKN Energy.
The blast occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time (04:00 GMT) in one of the production units of the Sarang oil field, the company said in a press release. "Operations at the affected facility have been halted until the site is deemed safe," the statement added.
No immediate cause for the explosion has been released, and there are no confirmed reports of casualties or environmental damage as of now. Emergency crews responded quickly to contain the incident.
This incident adds to the challenges faced by the Iraqi oil sector, particularly in the Kurdistan region, which plays a significant role in the country's energy exports.
