Ireland vows long-term backing for Ukraine
Ireland reiterated its steadfast commitment to Ukraine’s security and European future as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made his first official visit to Dublin on Tuesday. The visit took place at a time of heightened tension on the frontlines, with Irish leaders condemning Russia’s continued attacks and pledging to advocate for Ukraine within the European Union.
During a joint press conference, Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian president, noting that the visit comes “at a critical moment for Ukraine and for Europe.” He said Ireland deeply regrets that Zelenskyy’s trip occurs amid ongoing conflict, adding that Dublin hopes to one day welcome him “in a time of peace.”
Martin strongly criticized Russia’s military offensive, describing the persistent strikes on Ukrainian cities, infrastructure and civilians as “brutal” and “illegal.” He accused President Vladimir Putin of escalating violence in an attempt to gain leverage in future negotiations, warning that such tactics “must never be allowed to succeed.”
The Taoiseach emphasized Ireland’s commitment to supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes,” highlighting the country’s right to safety and the protection of its citizens. He noted that the constant drone and missile attacks have inflicted severe hardship on Ukrainian families, stressing that children deserve to “sleep safely in their own beds.”
Ireland also reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership. Martin stated that Dublin intends to use its upcoming EU presidency to help accelerate accession discussions, calling EU integration transformative for Ireland and potentially equally beneficial for Ukraine.
Addressing the Irish parliament, President Zelenskyy thanked Ireland for its sustained political and humanitarian support since the outbreak of the war. He told lawmakers that Ukraine is “closer to peace than ever,” urging the international community to intensify coordinated diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict to an end.
He emphasized that while one country can initiate a war, building a just and lasting peace requires a unified global effort, asserting that Ukraine’s struggle is tied to broader principles of international stability and democratic values.
