Israel: Netanyahu announces he will seek another term as Prime Minister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Saturday night that he intends to run for another term in office in the country’s upcoming elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channel 14, Netanyahu was asked whether he planned to run again for the position of prime minister. He replied, “Yes.” When asked if he believed he would win, he confidently responded, “Yes.”
Leader of the Likud Party, Netanyahu holds the record for the longest tenure as prime minister in Israel’s history — more than 18 years in total, though not consecutively, since first taking office in 1996.
In the 2022 legislative elections, the right-wing bloc led by Netanyahu, who had been ousted from power in 2021 after 12 consecutive years in office, emerged victorious. His party won 32 seats in the Knesset, while his ultra-Orthodox allies secured 18 seats, and the Religious Zionism alliance obtained 14, marking a historic success for the far right.
Netanyahu’s current term has been overshadowed by mass protests against his controversial judicial reform plan, which critics say threatens Israel’s democratic institutions.
Since the start of the ongoing war with Hamas, triggered by the militant group’s unprecedented attack from Gaza, Netanyahu has also faced mounting criticism from families of hostages taken by Hamas, who accuse his government of mishandling negotiations for their release.
