Israel’s hardliners demand submission, not partnership, in Morocco relations
A diplomatic storm has erupted following a smear campaign targeting Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef El Amrani, and his wife, Asma Lamrabet. The attack, spearheaded by pro-Israel hardliners, highlights the relentless demands for political servitude under the guise of “friendship.”
Morocco’s sovereignty under attack
Since October 2023, Ambassador El Amrani has represented Morocco in Washington with a balanced approach, embodying Morocco’s independent stance on Middle East diplomacy. However, recent accusations by Mustapha Ezzarghani, president of the Moroccan-Israeli Friendship Association, have sparked outrage. Ezzarghani’s article in JFeed accused El Amrani of neglecting relations with Jewish organizations and branded Lamrabet’s social media posts criticizing Gaza’s humanitarian crisis as antisemitic.
This calculated defamation campaign reflects an effort to enforce blind allegiance to Israel, undermining Morocco’s sovereign diplomatic decisions. The attacks extend beyond criticism, aiming to dictate Morocco’s foreign policy and tarnish its representatives.
A weaponized narrative
Ezzarghani’s claims, including allegations that El Amrani has failed to advance Moroccan-Israeli relations, ignore the ambassador’s active engagement with the Jewish community. His participation in events like Hilloula celebrations in Florida and Mimouna festivities in Washington underscores Morocco’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and cultural preservation. Additionally, El Amrani’s public acknowledgment of Holocaust education in Moroccan schools demonstrates his dedication to fostering mutual understanding.
Yet, these facts are overshadowed by false accusations designed to enforce a rigid pro-Israel orthodoxy. The conflation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism serves as a weapon to silence criticism and demand unwavering support for Israel’s policies.
Diplomatic independence at stake
The attack on El Amrani is not merely a personal affront but a direct challenge to Morocco’s sovereignty. As a representative appointed by King Mohammed VI, El Amrani’s role reflects the kingdom’s independent foreign policy, which balances support for Palestinian rights with engagement with Israel. Targeting Morocco’s ambassador is an attempt to erode this independence, imposing external control over the country’s diplomatic decisions.
Morocco’s sovereignty is further undermined by Ezzarghani’s suggestion that U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara depends on yielding to pro-Israel lobbies. This narrative disregards Morocco’s historical legitimacy and strategic partnerships, reducing its foreign policy to a bargaining chip for external interests.
Rejecting submission
The smear campaign against El Amrani and Lamrabet exposes the growing pressure on Morocco to sacrifice its independence for the sake of appeasing hardline pro-Israel factions. This new form of diplomatic imperialism demands not just normalization but absolute loyalty, undermining Morocco’s ability to chart its own course.
The Moroccan government and its people must categorically reject any attempts to transform normalization into subjugation. Sovereignty is non-negotiable, and Morocco’s diplomats must be empowered to represent the nation’s interests without intimidation or external interference.
Defending Morocco’s independence
Morocco’s balanced approach to Middle East diplomacy reflects its unique position as a nation rooted in cultural diversity and interfaith harmony. Attempts to coerce the kingdom into adopting a one-sided stance threaten to destabilize this equilibrium and weaken its standing as a sovereign state.
By defending its diplomats and rejecting external coercion, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to independence and mutual respect in international relations. The line must be drawn to protect not only El Amrani and Lamrabet but also the kingdom’s broader role as a sovereign nation charting its own path.
