The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it killed five Palestinian fighters posing as humanitarian workers during an airstrike last week in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Israeli army, the armed men were “near a vehicle marked with the logo of the international aid organization World Central Kitchen (WCK), despite having no affiliation with the group, and posed a threat to our troops.”

The military released aerial images showing the men near the vehicle bearing the WCK logo and wearing yellow vests, typically used by humanitarian staff. The army stated that the vests were used to “hide their activities and avoid being targeted.” It did not specify which group the fighters belonged to.

Before conducting the strike, the army said it confirmed with WCK that the vehicle identified in the Deir el-Balah area, central Gaza, had no connection to the organization. “The five terrorists were neutralized by an airstrike,” the statement added.

WCK confirmed to AFP that “the vehicle and the individuals involved were not affiliated” with the NGO. The organization condemned the impersonation, noting it endangers both civilians and humanitarian workers, and reaffirmed that the safety of its teams remains a top priority.
