Israeli drone strike kills 11-year-old boy in Southern Lebanon despite ceasefire
An Israeli drone strike killed an 11-year-old boy named Abbas Merhi on Wednesday in the village of Touline, located in the Marjeyoun district of southern Lebanon. His father was also injured in the attack, according to local sources.
The strike reportedly targeted a motorcycle parked in a garage, despite the ceasefire officially in place since November 27, 2024, following more than a year of clashes between Hezbollah and Israel.
Israeli military activity continued on multiple fronts that day. In Yaroun, in the Bint Jbeil district, a drone dropped a stun grenade, causing panic but no injuries. Meanwhile, artillery fire targeted the outskirts of Chebaa in the Hasbaya district, and additional drone strikes hit the eastern area of Khiam near al-Baraka school.
In a separate incident, the Israeli army announced that it had eliminated a Hezbollah operative in the Bekaa Valley on Tuesday night. According to military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, Houssam Kassem Ghreib was allegedly leading Hezbollah-linked “terrorist cells” operating from Syria and planning attacks on Israeli-controlled areas of the Golan Heights.
The strike occurred near Brital, close to Baalbek. Ghreib was reportedly targeted twice by the drone, with the first attempt missing and the second proving fatal. Israeli media referred to him as a commander in Hezbollah’s “Unit 1900,” although this has not been confirmed by official sources. Hezbollah has not issued a statement on the incident.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel maintains military positions along the Blue Line and continues near-daily attacks, primarily targeting Hezbollah operatives. However, civilians have increasingly become victims of these operations. According to figures compiled from UN data and the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 293 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon since the truce began.
