Israeli finance minister smotrich resigns from netanyahu's government

Israeli Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, submitted his resignation on Monday through a letter addressed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A spokesperson for Smotrich confirmed that the resignation was a protest against the request by Itamar Ben Gvir, leader of the far-right Jewish Power party, for more ministerial positions upon his return to the government.

Although official details about the resignation's reasons have not yet been disclosed, Israeli sources suggest that it reflects ongoing internal disagreements within the ruling coalition led by Netanyahu. These tensions are exacerbated by the political and security pressures the government faces due to the escalating violence in Gaza and the West Bank.

Smotrich is one of the most prominent right-wing figures within the Israeli government and has faced widespread criticism both locally and internationally for his hardline stance towards Palestinians and his advocacy for the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. Recently, internal disputes within the ruling coalition have sparked speculation about potential ministerial changes that could affect the stability of the government.
