Israeli minister's luxury Marrakech trip sparks controversy amid Gaza tensions
Israeli media have sharply criticized Transportation Minister Miri Regev's upcoming costly visit to Morocco, where she plans to attend a road safety conference in Marrakech. The controversy centers around the minister's accommodation expenses at the Four Seasons hotel, with suite prices ranging from 1,200 to 3,700 euros. The total cost for the minister and her delegation could exceed half a million shekels.
While Regev's office claims the Moroccan government extended an invitation covering hotel accommodations similar to other participating ministers, the Israeli delegation opted for different lodging, citing security concerns.
The planned visit occurs during a sensitive period, as many Moroccans continue to oppose Israel's military actions in Gaza despite an ongoing ceasefire. Public sentiment in Morocco has increasingly called for the government to end diplomatic ties with Israel, which were established through US-brokered normalization.
Morocco's government has responded to criticism by reaffirming its support for the Palestinian cause and has repeatedly condemned Israeli military actions targeting civilians. Throughout the conflict, Morocco has provided humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
The situation has become more complex following US President Trump's recent proposal suggesting Palestinians be "resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities with new and modern homes." This plan has faced unanimous rejection from Arab leaders who deny any prior agreement to such an initiative.
The minister's visit is expected to generate additional criticism from Moroccan citizens who have been vocal in opposing their country's diplomatic relationship with Israel, particularly in light of the extensive casualties and destruction in Gaza over the past year.
