The northern Italian town of Pontida hosted on Sunday the annual gathering of the far-right League party, led by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. Thousands of supporters, many wearing T-shirts bearing the image of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk—assassinated earlier this month—joined lawmakers and international allies in a show of unity against immigration, European institutions, and what they described as threats to “freedom of expression.”

Speakers hailed the “awakening of the people” and warned of dangers posed by “radical Islamism” and “leftist elites.” Among the international guests were Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s National Rally, who attacked both President Emmanuel Macron and the European Union, describing the bloc as “a crazy machine strangling farmers, industries, and businesses.”

Flavio Bolsonaro, son of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, echoed similar themes, denouncing what he called judicial persecution against conservatives and reaffirming values of “God, homeland, family, and freedom.” In a video address, Santiago Abascal of Spain’s Vox party called for a Europe “based on the sovereignty of nations.”

Closing the event, Salvini reiterated his opposition to Italy’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, insisting that the country “would not send its sons to die abroad” and vowing not to yield to “the whims of minor European leaders.”
