Italian authorities have launched an investigation after a series of incidents disrupted rail traffic in central Italy during the opening weekend of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, raising concerns over possible acts of sabotage.

The disturbances affected several railway lines near major transport hubs, including areas around Bologna, leading to significant delays for thousands of passengers. According to official sources, damage was reported on key infrastructure elements, prompting heightened security measures across the rail network.

Italy’s Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini, described the incidents as serious and said they were being closely monitored, noting that their timing coincided with the start of the Olympic Games. While no direct link has been formally established, investigators are examining whether the disruptions could be connected to the international sporting event.

Police sources indicated that one of the incidents involved a fire near a rail switching system on a major line in northern Italy. Authorities consider the cause likely intentional, although no group or individual has claimed responsibility so far.

The situation has drawn comparisons to previous cases of rail sabotage in Europe during high-profile events, reinforcing concerns about the vulnerability of transport infrastructure during periods of heightened international attention.

The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics took place in Milan, while competitions are being held across northern Italy’s alpine regions. As investigations continue, Italian officials have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of public transport throughout the duration of the Games.
