Japan Election: Takaichi seeks historic gender parity in government
Nationalist politician Sanae Takaichi, a frontrunner in the race to lead Japan’s ruling party, pledged on Monday to significantly improve gender parity within her government. Her proposal aims to reach a “Scandinavian-level” representation of women, challenging Japan’s traditionally male-dominated political landscape.
The election for the next leader of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is scheduled for October 4, following Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation on September 7. If Takaichi wins the party vote and secures parliamentary approval, she would become the first female prime minister in Japan’s history at the age of 64.
Takaichi’s campaign highlights a growing focus on gender equality in Japanese politics, signaling potential reforms in government composition and policies to support women in leadership roles.
