Japan has unequivocally reiterated its non-recognition of the Polisario Front during the preparatory meetings for the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) held in Yokohama. At the opening of the senior officials' meeting, the head of the Japanese delegation stated that the presence of the separatist group does not alter Japan's firm position on their status.

The official emphasized that Japan did not extend an invitation to the Polisario, as it only invites states with which it maintains diplomatic relations. He clarified that the African Union, which includes the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), had made the decision to invite all its members.

This stance was reinforced by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya during the ministerial meeting of TICAD-9, where he confirmed that the presence of entities not recognized by Japan does not impact its diplomatic position. Just days before, he noted that Japan "does not recognize what is called the 'Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic'" and affirmed that there had been no change in its policy regarding the Polisario's participation in TICAD.

In a previous incident during TICAD-9 preparations, a member of the Polisario attempted to infiltrate the meeting, disguising themselves as an Algerian delegate. This led to a confrontation when the Moroccan delegation sought to remove an unauthorized nameplate representing the self-styled republic. Japan's Foreign Ministry intervened, emphasizing that only UN member states receive invitations to TICAD.

By reaffirming its position, Japan highlights its commitment to international law and UN principles, aligning with the majority of UN member states that do not recognize the Polisario and support Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara.

With international support from countries like the US, the UK, and France, Morocco’s stance on Sahara continues to gain momentum. TICAD-9, taking place from August 19 to 23, aims to enhance cooperation and promote development across Africa in a peaceful and stable context.
