Japan: Spanish tourist attacked by bear in popular mountain village
A Spanish tourist was injured by a bear in a well-known Japanese tourist village, local officials reported on Monday, just days after two people were killed in similar attacks elsewhere in the country.
The 44-year-old man was attacked on Sunday while walking to a bus stop in Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its traditional thatched-roof farmhouses, said Kazunari Takashima, a village official.
The tourist sustained a minor arm injury and later walked to a nearby tourist information center before being treated at a local hospital. He was discharged the same day.
Authorities have closed nearby hiking trails and increased patrols, as bear attacks have become more frequent across Japan. Between April and August 2025, five people were killed and 64 others injured in bear-related incidents nationwide.
