Jimmy Kimmel calls Donald Trump’s government “anti-American” in TV comeback
Comedian and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel returned to the stage of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, delivering a sharp rebuke to U.S. president Donald Trump. After a suspension following controversial remarks earlier this month, Kimmel used his comeback monologue to accuse the Trump administration of undermining freedom of speech.
“A government that threatens to silence a comedian the president doesn’t like is anti-American,” Kimmel declared during a 17-minute monologue that mixed criticism with humor. He also reminded viewers that freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment, contrasting Trump’s recent attacks with the president’s own past statements praising free expression.
The controversy began when Kimmel criticized conservatives for politicizing the murder of influencer Charlie Kirk, a case that quickly became a flashpoint in U.S. partisan debates. Trump responded by lashing out at ABC, accusing the network of being biased toward Democrats, and labeling Kimmel as an extension of the Democratic National Committee.
Kimmel defended his role as a comedian, noting that satire and talk shows are a safeguard for democracy. He compared the situation in the U.S. with countries where mocking those in power could result in imprisonment or worse. “This show isn’t important,” he said, “but what matters is that we live in a country that allows shows like this to exist.”
He admitted he had once taken freedom of speech for granted but argued that recent attempts to pressure broadcasters and silence critical voices reveal how fragile those rights can be.
