Jubilant Peruvians Celebrate New Pope at Mass in Adoptive City
Thousands of Peruvians gathered with joy in Chiclayo to celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV, a man they proudly claim as one of their own. The newly appointed head of the Catholic Church, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, spent nearly a decade living and serving in the northern coastal city, which has now become a spiritual epicenter of pride and celebration.
Bishop Edinson Farfan, addressing a full congregation at St. Mary’s Cathedral, emphasized the deep bond Pope Leo shares with Chiclayo, describing the city as a simple and beloved place that still holds a special place in his heart. Pope Leo first arrived in Peru over 40 years ago as a missionary and later returned in 2014, becoming the Bishop of Chiclayo and acquiring Peruvian citizenship.
His pastoral mission in the city continued until 2023 when he was called to Rome by Pope Francis. In his first speech from the Vatican, Leo addressed his “beloved diocese of Chiclayo” in Spanish and honored its people for their enduring faith.
Back in Chiclayo, emotions ran high. Residents filled the cathedral with chants, yellow balloons, and photos from his years as bishop. "There are no words to explain what we feel—our pope was here among us," said Rosa Maria Bernadese, a local teaching assistant.
Bishop Farfan praised Leo’s commitment to social justice and his compassion for the marginalized, including migrants and refugees. He described Chiclayo as "the city of friendship and the Eucharist," and expressed confidence that Pope Leo will now guide the global Church with the same spirit he shared locally.
As the city basks in this historic moment, locals expressed hopes that the new pope will one day return. "We will surely invite him back," Bishop Farfan promised.
