The 22nd edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) commenced today at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, bringing together filmmakers, actors, and artists to celebrate global cinema. The festival’s jury, chaired by Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho, joined a press event to discuss their perspectives on contemporary cinema, storytelling, and the festival’s mission.

This year's jury includes a diverse group of prominent figures: Karim Aïnouz, Julia Ducournau, Hakim Belabbes, Payman Maadi, Jenna Ortega, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Celine Song. Representing a mix of generations and artistic styles, the panel reflects the festival’s aim to unite local and international voices in dialogue.

Bong Joon Ho highlighted Marrakech as "a meeting point where filmmakers from around the world come together to exchange ideas and celebrate creativity." Julia Ducournau praised the festival’s focus on emerging talent, while Moroccan filmmaker Hakim Belabbes underlined its role in amplifying regional cinema on a global stage.

The jury expressed admiration for the bold artistry of young filmmakers, with Bong Joon Ho noting their ability to "redefine storytelling and take risks that challenge both form and content." Their innovative approach, he added, is reshaping the boundaries of modern cinema.

A lively discussion also emerged on the influence of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Julia Ducournau called AI “controversial,” arguing it cannot replicate the human touch that defines creativity. Celine Song warned of AI’s pervasive influence, describing it as “colonizing our planet and minds.” Jenna Ortega likened its rapid evolution to “opening a Pandora’s box,” urging caution about its ethical and artistic implications.

As the festival unfolds, Marrakech continues its tradition of fostering cross-cultural exchange, offering a platform for stories that bridge global perspectives with Moroccan culture and creativity. The 22nd edition stands as a testament to the enduring power of cinematic storytelling to inspire and connect audiences worldwide.
