Kazakhstan announces intention to join Abraham accords
Kazakhstan has announced its intention to join the Abraham Accords, the diplomatic initiative launched in 2020 that enabled several Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel. The decision, made public on Thursday, was welcomed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who called it a significant step toward greater international cooperation.
On his Truth Social account, Trump said he held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, describing the move as “a major advance in building bridges across the world.” He highlighted that Kazakhstan would become the first country to join the process during his second term.
A path of diplomatic continuity
Unlike the first signatories in 2020 — the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan — Kazakhstan already maintains diplomatic ties with Israel. In an official statement, the Kazakh government framed this decision as a “natural continuation” of its foreign policy, based on dialogue, regional stability, and multilateralism.
Kazakhstan is also participating in a Washington summit alongside other Central Asian nations, reflecting its growing importance in the region’s strategic balance.
A sensitive diplomatic process
The Abraham Accords remain a priority for Washington, which hopes to encourage other countries to join. The U.S. administration continues to express its wish to see Saudi Arabia enter the agreement, although Riyadh has reiterated that normalization is impossible without tangible progress toward a viable Palestinian state.
Amid the ongoing Gaza war, triggered in October 2023, several nations have expressed caution toward normalization, insisting that efforts should focus on achieving a lasting political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
While the practical details of Kazakhstan’s accession have yet to be clarified, its announcement sends a strong diplomatic signal — one that underlines the country’s ambition to act as a bridge between regions in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
