Khaby Lame forced to leave the United States
Khaby Lame, the world’s most followed TikTok star, faced a brief detention by U.S. immigration authorities (ICE) after overstaying his visa. The Senegalese-Italian influencer was allowed a voluntary departure and has since left the country, officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to ICE, the 25-year-old Italian citizen was detained on June 6 at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport for immigration violations. He had entered the U.S. on April 30 and exceeded the permitted visa duration.
With over 162 million followers, Khaby Lame is renowned for his silent videos humorously mocking complicated online tutorials, often ending with his trademark gesture of open palms and a knowing smile. He rose to fame after losing his factory mechanic job in March 2020 and quickly built a significant online presence that generated substantial income, including $16.5 million from brand deals between June 2022 and September 2023, as reported by Forbes.
Since Donald Trump’s return to office in January, immigration enforcement has intensified, leading to numerous deportations and legal challenges. Khaby Lame, appointed UNICEF ambassador in late January, has not publicly commented on the incident.
