Kiev, September 7, 2025 – The headquarters of the Ukrainian government in Kiev was set ablaze Sunday following a record overnight Russian airstrike, killing at least five people, including two in the capital.

“For the first time, the roof and upper floors of the government headquarters were damaged by enemy attacks,” Prime Minister Ioulia Svyrydenko wrote on Telegram, sharing images of flames engulfing the building near the presidency and parliament.

The capital experienced a major drone and missile attack, resulting in at least two deaths and 18 injuries. Several residential buildings were also damaged, including the tragic death of a one-year-old girl. Russian forces reportedly fired over 800 missiles between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, making this the largest airstrike since the conflict began in February 2022. Ukrainian air defense neutralized 747 drones and four missiles.

“The world must respond not only with words but with actions. We need to increase sanctions, mainly on Russian oil and gas,” the Prime Minister said, calling for military support.

Other regions, including Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporijjia, and Soumy, also suffered casualties and damage during similar attacks. Approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory remains under Kremlin control.

Diplomatic efforts, including a summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska and Zelensky’s visit to Washington, have so far failed to produce a ceasefire. Nevertheless, 26 countries, mostly European, pledged in Paris to provide security guarantees for Ukraine to deter further Russian aggression.
