Knife attack in Marseille: Five injured, Suspect shot by Police
Five people were injured, including one critically, during a knife attack in the center of Marseille on Tuesday. The suspect, a 35-year-old Tunisian man legally residing in France, was shot and killed by police after a series of violent assaults.
The incident began when the man, recently expelled from his hotel for unpaid rent, returned to the premises and stabbed a resident in the torso. He then attacked the hotel manager and the manager’s son on the street. Later, he attempted to assault additional people in a nearby snack bar. Witnesses reported that he carried two knives and a baton and attacked people indiscriminately.
Police officers intervened promptly. After giving repeated orders to drop his weapons, the suspect charged at them and was neutralized using firearms. Despite resuscitation efforts, he died at the scene.
Authorities stated that initial investigations do not suggest a terrorist motive, although the suspect was heard shouting religious phrases. The police internal affairs (IGPN) has been tasked with reviewing the intervention. The French Interior Minister praised the presence of a police patrol at the right place and time, preventing further casualties.
Mayor Benoît Payan highlighted the ongoing shortage of police personnel in France’s second-largest city, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures.
