Kosovo’s ruling party takes lead in snap election
Kosovo’s ruling party, Vetevendosje (Self-Determination Movement), led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, has taken a decisive lead in the country’s snap parliamentary elections held on Sunday.
With approximately 98% of the ballots counted, Vetevendosje secured 49.62% of the vote, according to preliminary results released by the Kosovo Central Election Commission.
Speaking to journalists at his party’s headquarters, Kurti described the outcome as the “biggest victory in the history of the country.” He said that once the final results are officially announced, his party would move swiftly to form a new government and continue its reform agenda.
Kurti also expressed hope for cooperation with opposition parties, stressing the importance of parliamentary consensus to ratify international agreements.
Later in the evening, the prime minister celebrated the victory alongside supporters in the center of the capital, Pristina.
According to official figures, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) came second with 21.17% of the vote, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 13.68%, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) with 5.71%.
The Kosovo Democratic Turkish Party (KDTP), which competes for the two parliamentary seats reserved for the Turkish minority, received 0.62% of the vote, equivalent to 5,332 ballots.
To form a governing majority, Vetevendosje is expected to once again reach agreements with minority and community parties, including the KDTP, which was a coalition partner in the previous legislature.
Preliminary turnout was reported at 44.99%, excluding conditional ballots, votes cast abroad, and postal votes. Kosovo police confirmed that the election process unfolded peacefully, with no major incidents reported.
Out of nearly two million registered voters, 120 members of parliament will be elected from 24 political entities for a four-year mandate. Vetevendosje has now emerged as the leading party in Kosovo’s last three general elections.
